Video techniques and influences

Mac Demarco - 'Ode to Viceroy'

Some video techniques that i would like to use in my music video, include techniques from my chosen song's music video 'Ode to Viceroy', such as the fish eye lens and the saturation of the video, i don't want to replicate this style straight from my chosen music video as mine would not seem authentic and would look as if i had ripped it off straight from the source video.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers - 'Can't Stop'

I would like to strongly like to use a lot of the techniques from this music video by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, such as the long shots of the Anthony Kiedis playing with bottles and other band members just playing with random buckets, i like how the video doesn't reflect the lyrics and is abstract. The video is also very vibrant with the colour use, including strong yellows, oranges and blues, this is something that i don't want to reflect in my own video, i want to use dark, green, brownish colours as the use of bright colours will make the audience feel happier and liven the mood.

Massive Attack - 'Angel'

This video is a strong influence for my own music video, the slow progression of the song and the strong use of slow motion is something that i would like to take away from this music video and incorporate into mine,  would also like to us some of the lighting techniques from this, the lights in this video really emphasises the mood of the song and almost makes the audience feel for the protagonist in the video, almost like an adrenaline rush.

Safety Assessments of my locations

Here is my risk assessment of all my locations I plan to shoot on, most of the areas I want to film on and the timings of when i want to film are all quite dangerous so there are a few risks and ways to overcome them but overall we just have to be careful and make sure we have someone to contact incase of an emergency.

Locations

One of my locations that i am going to shoot on is South Cave quarry, up swinescaife road. The quarry is abandoned and has a lot of old buildings and mining equipment left around. The location is also surrounded by a lot of greenery, there is also a forrest near it, where i also plan to shoot. This area will be mainly used to film long shots and establishing shots.

Another location i plan on shooting on, is Hull oldtown, it is a very scenic location and around midnight, the time i would like to film in this location it gets very quiet and the lights within the streets and the square will really bring out the mood and atmosphere for my music video. i plan on having my actor sit in the square underneath the queen victoria statue and have them smoke, i think this will be a great shot due to the season of the year, winter, which will help bring out the smoke than it would if it was filmed in Summer.

My next locations are Brough Foreshore and Hessle Foreshore, i feel fortunate that i have such a big structure (the humber bridge) in my local area, therefore i want to make the most of it and hope to get some great shots of the bridge surrounded in fog. At Brough Foreshore, there are plenty of abandoned boats and buildings, this is all on the edge of the river humber, so im hoping to get some shots of my actor placed in these boats and buildings with the humber present in the background.

I have many other locations that i want to film on, such as my bedroom, Spring Bank, Hull Royal infirmary, Welton Waters, Welton Cemetary and Welton woods. However the locations i have suggested above, are my most significant locations to film on and these areas will have the most show time within my music video.

Narrative analysis of comfortably numb video

One of the strongest theories that links to this chosen music video 'Comfortably numb' by Pink floyd is Tim O'sullivan's (1998) theory that all media texts use some kind of story, this music video is taken from the movie 'Pink Floyd: The Wall'. The story behind the music video is about a rock stars slow spiral into depression and insanity; hence the flashbacks of him when he was a child and the outrage were he destroys everything in the apartment. This story can be related to real life stars who have suffered this, mainly Syd Barrett, who this film was dedicated to.
Another strong theory by Kate Domaille (2001) that every story ever created can be fitted into one of eight narrative types, the music video for comfortably numb can be fitted into the story of Achilles, where the main protagonist is or seems invincible, but they have one flaw that corrupts them and eventually could kill them, this video shows a very wealthy, famous rock star who's flaw is drugs and depression and eventually comes to his downfall. Joseph Campbell's (1949) theory 'Universal Hero Monomyth' can also be linked to Comfortably numb, he states that there is an underlying structure of iconography, themes, concepts and narrative structure that is common to the religions, myths and legends of every culture in the world. One of his ideas was 'The Ordeal' this is the hero that must face his fear or mortal enemy who may seem more powerful. Mental or physical torture may occur, this is exactly what happens in this video, just that the main protagonist is battling with himself, another theory from Campbell is 'Return with the Elixir' where the hero/protagonist return to the ordinary world with some wisdom, knowledge or something else gained from the adventure, for example at the end of the video the protagonist is seen peeling away skin like a maggot and is finally reborn.

Sven Carlsson's (1999) theory that music videos can be separated into two categories; Performance and conceptual, this video is strongly conceptual as there is no performance what so ever and is all conceptual and mainly focuses on the story rather than the performance of the music. Therefore this video is a strong narrative video.

Bordwell and Thompson (1997) offer two distinctions between stories and plot which relate to the diegetic world of the narrative that the audience are positioned to accept and that which the audience actually see. Comfortably numb has a very strong link between the diegetic narrative and the videos, the song basically described what I happening within the video and is song from the first person view of the protagonist but is performed by Pink Floyd themselves, the lyrics express his feelings as a child and now as a man.
